National Dong Hwa University Committee for General Education

In order to implement the practice of quality education, the cross-colleges Committee for General Education was established. It is responsible for the integration of curricular recourses between different departments. In addition, the committee would plan for all the students to learn other basic knowledge and to be equipped with a new vision besides their specialized field. There are three different major organizations under the committee, the committee for General Education, the Physical Education Office, and the Military Training Office. Furthermore, in order to elaborate the role which the committee plays in the curriculums of the school, and to kick start the initialization of the Educational Courses, the Little Tree (Center for Breeding Teachers) was established in 1998, which is responsible to train the students into becoming junior/ senior high school teachers who are aware of the surrounding environment and possess diversified viewpoints of education. In 2000, the kindergarten was affiliated with the Committee for General Education. Thus, presently there are seven different organizations under the Committee for General Education. Their main goals are listed below.

Department of Common Courses

This department is responsible to plan and establish all the courses of general education for the university.

Physical Education Office

This department is responsible no only to carry out all the courses of physical education for the university, but also to conduct the physical activities, competitions. Training of the school teams is also the duty of this department.

Military Training Office

This center is designated to plan and to teach the military courses for the university. The Little Tree (Center for Breeding Teachers): This department is established to plan all educational courses for the university, to arrange the practical training, and to assist areas related to education within the university.

Arts Center

This purpose of this center to provide art activities for the school and the society in order to facilitate the conservation of art and culture.

Affiliated Kindergarten

The kindergarten is affiliated to the National Dong Hwa University.

Language Center

This department is responsible to support the English courses belonged to the General Education, and to provide English (and other languages) assistance or consultation for the administration.

The emphasis and the characteristic of our development

We want to emphasize on a general education which is erudite and elegant. In order to provide students with the opportunity to gain some extra basic knowledge in a broader spectrum besides their specialized field, we categorized the general education into four major fields: language, humanities and arts, social sciences, and mathematics, physics, and technology. In every field, we encourage the professors in our university to hold groups to plan the related courses. Also, we set a rule that every student must undertake a minimum number of credits in every field. Each bachelor student must take at least 39 credits related to general education courses, physical education (required for the freshmen and the sophomores, elective courses for the juniors and the seniors), and military training courses (elective courses). With this rule, the intended goal is that all the students would become knowledgeable with a broad vision, thus reflecting our goal of high quality education. Furthermore language ability, consciousness of humanity and arts, general sense of law, commercial management, and mathematics, physics, and technology are our core courses of general education. The school offers educational courses which emphasize on nature and multi-culture. The educational stream was established in 1998. The highlight was to combine the two characteristics of Hualien, which are nature and cultural diversity. We want to continue the role that the Committee for General Education plays in the planning of courses of general education, which is to coordinate and to cooperate with different departments. We are glad to take the great responsibility to cultivate the teachers for the eastern districts.
