LINKS

As a student in Art Education 160,  you will be expected to visit museums and art galleries in Columbus as well as in cities far away from OSU.  This, of course is not practical in a real sense, but it can certainly be done on the web, in a virtual sense.  We know that students taking 160 arrive with a variety of skills, and different levels of sophistication regarding computers and the web. For some, this may be their first experience in using the web.  Others have had a great deal of experience on the web and are acquainted with the various search engines.  If you are new to the web, this site is perhaps the easiest way to link into resources that relate to contemporary art  and you may find it to be a useful starting point.  Each of these links has other links that will help you explore on a wider and wider basis.

The arrangement of the links below is quite simple - beginning with several cities that are centers for contemporary art.  This is a very small selection of the resources that are available in the United States and around the world and should be considered only a starting point for your exploration.

After the cities, you will find a set search engines that will help you extend your search well beyond what can be found here.  Have a good trip, and remember that the journey is often more important than the destination.

New York

New York City is considered the major center for contemporary art in the United States.  The Museum of Modern Art,  the Guggenheim, the Whitney, and the Dia Center are important contemporary museums in N.Y.

New York has several areas where art galleries are found in large numbers. Three of these which tend to concentrate on contemporary art are Soho, Chelsea, and the Uptown area around 57th Street and Fifth Avenue.

Soho

Soho, which is called Soho by New Yorkers because it is South of Houston Street, is a relatively small section in N.Y. that has hundreds of galleries and artist's studios, and is thought by many to be the hip center of the art world.  The following site has a wealth of information about Soho. Unfortunately, because of lack of a sponsor, the site has not been updated lately. It is still useful because it gives you a comprehensive view of this important art center. After the Soho site, you will find links for several of Soho's many galleries.

Chelsea

Chelsea. Many of the more avant-garde galleries are moving from Soho to Chelsea because the rents in Soho are very high and commercial firms like Victoria's Secret and Banana Republic have moved into the area. Several of the major Chelsea Galleries are found below. There are many others.

Uptown

The Uptown galleries are found in high-rise buildings along both East and West 57th Street as well as the avenues that intersect with 57th. Some of these galleries are relatively new, while others have a long history of dealing in contemporary art. Here are a few.
