What are Monotype and Monoprint?

Monotype and monoprint are subcategories of printmaking art. By definition, printmaking is to make artworks by printing methods within limited editions. Printing methods entail the possibility of mass production, but mass production is not considered as artmaking. Therefore, the premise of printmaking, as an art form, is to limit the number of the prints. The permissible number of prints for both monotype and monoprint, as their names imply, is only ONE, no more, no less.

It might be easier to consider both monotype and monoprint artworks as “printed paintings,” because their creation processes are almost the same as the painting process, except monotype’s and monoprint’s paintings are first painted on a surface (such as a plate) and then transferred onto a piece of paper by the means of printing.

Both monotype and monoprint combine printmaking, painting and drawing into one artistic endeavor. They give great joy as their processes are spontaneous and their outcomes are always surprising.

The differences between monotype and monoprint are that monotype is one of a kind, whereas monoprint is one of a series. In the process of monoprint, a basic drawing is etched to serve as the basic pattern, and then variations are added to each print to be made. However, to make monotype art, every process is unique, and every work entails its originality. In the class, we shall explore your imagination through these unique artmaking processes.
