I chose this image of a bluebird for my self-image. It is a digitally manipulated version of part of a photograph that I am using as a model for an autobiographical painting. This image was made using the Photoshop brushstroke tool. I may replace the image with a digitized photo of a part of my painting (depicting the same bird) once the painting is complete. I find the bluebird in flight to be an enigmatic, but optimistic symbol. Personally, I identify with the bluebird of happiness. In my life I never know whether it is taking flight or flying away. But, as a teacher I think that the idea of flight symbolizes high expectations and adventure, while the bluebird symbolizes an enjoyable educational journey.
In my art classroom, students will experience an adventurous exploration of the meanings of images within specific cultures, across cultures, and within the greater context of the meaning of human existence. Students also will be given the technical tools that will allow their own self-expression to take flight.
