Class Activity:
Writing Your Own Villanelle of Color

In "Submariner (Where Everything is Blue)," we learned the form of villanelle, a poem which consists of five tercets and a final quatrain. In writing your own villanelle, you can simplify the poetic rules while at the same time fulfilling the following requirements. What matters the most is your creativity and originality.

1)   Write on a color that could be your favorite or is inspiring to you.

2)   Include 3 tercets and 1 final quatrain. The first and third lines of the initial tercet are alternatively repeated as the final lines of the tercets which follow, and then appear together as a couplet in the final quatrain.

3)   Use as many concrete images as possible (at least 3) to arouse the reader's sensual experience.

4)   Complicate your content by using at least 2 figures of speech such as personification, puns, and metaphor.

5)   Entitle your poem.

Post your poem to our discussion board after you are done.
