Tenable objective

Hualien locates at the suture zone of Eurasian Plate and Philippine Plate in eastern Pacific Ocean. Consequently, there are many important research topics in Earth Sciences such as earthquakes, regional geology and geomorphology, geotectonic, petrology and mineralogy, hillslope processes, typhoon, environmental changes, coastal erosion, applications of Remote Sensing and GIS, natural resources management and disasters mitigation, landscape conservation, land planning etc. Our university occupies one of the best geographical positions to study these topics and an Institute of Earth Sciences was established on August 1, 2005 to achieve an excellent research oriented unit and provide national and international collaborations on those research topics.

Goal characteristic

l  We are devoted to establish a strong connection between geosciences and environmental sciences,

      and pursue excellence in academic.

l  Our staffs are monitoring short-term environmental changes in eastern Taiwan and accumulate long-term

     monitoring data to develop stochastic models.

l  Our regional survey data and results will apply to regional planning and land use plan of the region.

l  We are setting up an research field station to support national and international researchers investigate this

      region and we will try to update the on-going research topics in this region and part of their results on

     our website. We hope that this field station will become a local center of geosciences research in eastern

     Taiwan and a data bank of local researches.

l  Our staff will promote the knowledge and technology using in geosciences and environmental sciences and

     provide chance of continuous education, training and social service national or international-wide.
