Social Psychology

(course taught in either English or Chinese, depending on the course chosen)

Social Psychology is a scientific study investigating people’s thoughts, feelings, and actions, which are influenced by the real or imagined presence of other people. More specifically, social psychology will provide us with an understanding of how people are influenced by their interpersonal experiences and interpretations of their social environments. Potential topics within this subject include social cognition (e.g., social judgment), social perception (e.g., causal attribution, and nonverbal communication), self-knowledge (e.g., self-awareness, and social comparison), self-esteem (e.g., coping with self-discrepancy), social influence (e.g., attitude changes, conformity, and group processes), interpersonal relations (e.g., attraction and close relationships), prosocial behavior, aggression, and prejudice, etc.

Personality Psychology

(course taught in English)

This course will provide an in-depth introduction to the important concepts and theories in personality psychology. Students will gain comprehensive knowledge regarding personality from different theoretical perspectives, as well as relevant approaches of conducting research on personality. This course will enable students to understand human nature more deeply; they are also expected to gain necessary abilities and skills that will prepare them for advanced courses in practical areas of psychology, including counseling, individual differences and assessment, and psychological therapy.

Theory and Practice of Psychological Research

(course taught in English)

This course will introduce the necessary knowledge for conducting scientific studies in the area of psychology. Students are expected to learn the major research methods, including problem identification and hypothesis formation, research designs, research procedures, and research presentations, etc. Students are expected to be responsible for being an active learner, and participate in the class discussion as necessary. They will be encouraged to express their ideas in class, learn to listen to and respect other peoples’ opinions, and cooperate in teamwork as well. Through this brainstorming learning process, they will be able to acquire different point of views and problem-solving strategies, preparing themselves to become sympathetic psychologists and successful researchers in the future. Students will be also encouraged to challenge what they have learned and see beyond the current trends of psychology, as I believe this is especially important in university education, since the learning is expected to be an advanced process of integrating, applying, and creating knowledge.

General Psychology

(course taught in English) (before June, 2016)

“General psychology” is a two-semester course. This course will provide an introduction to the important concepts and theories in the main areas of psychology. I will guide the students in understanding and furthering explorations of human beings' thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. For the first semester, the focus will be on the general introduction of psychology, research methods in psychology, biological and evolutionary foundation of psychology, sensation and perception, mind and consciousness, learning and behavior analysis, memory, and cognitive processes. For the second semester, the focus will be on intelligence, human development, motivation, emotion, personality, social psychology, and psychological disorders and therapy. The major goal of this course is to trigger students' interests in learning about and understanding psychology. Students are expected to be responsible for being an active learner, and participate in the class discussion as necessary. This course will prepare students for advanced psychology courses and considering a future career related to psychology.
