假設我在Waltz（1979）的一本書看到Livernash（1963）在某期刊的一句話很精彩： the

negotiations 我在文中翻譯、並以引號處理，接下來怎麼辦？有幾種方式。 （一）最簡單的作法是在參考文獻根本不提Livernash（1963）這篇論文，只交代Waltz（1979）這本書。內文這樣寫著； Livernash（Waltz,
1979: 114）就曾經指出，「罷工所導致的代價促使勞資雙方經常透過大範圍的談判來使爭端得以解決，從而使罷工很少真正發生。」 然後，參考文獻只列出Waltz（1979）： Waltz, Kenneth N.

McGraw-Hill. 這樣的作法，就是把責任交給Waltz，萬一Waltz的來源交代不清、或是不全（譬如頁碼錯誤、或是故意設下陷阱），不會被抓包。 （二）如果時間充裕、或是覺得有必要去念Livernash（1963）這論文，那麼，就真的要去把這本期刊找出來、並且真的念到這頁，而非道聽途說。這時候，內文就可以大大方方地夾注： Livernash（1963:
430）就曾經指出，「罷工所導致的代價促使勞資雙方經常透過大範圍的談判來使爭端得以解決，從而使罷工很少真正發生。」 然後，參考文獻只列出Livernash（1963）： Livernash, E. R. 1963. “The Relation of Power to the
Structure and Process of Collective Bargaining.” Journal of law and Economics, Vol. 6, pp. 10-40. （三）採用「轉引」方式，也就是在參考文獻先列入Livernash（1963）這篇論文的來源，在於後面交代是間接由Waltz（1979）得知，而非直接由Livernash（1963）的論文讀到。內文寫法是： Livernash（轉引自Waltz, 1979: 114）就曾經指出，「罷工所導致的代價促使勞資雙方經常透過大範圍的談判來使爭端得以解決，從而使罷工很少真正發生。」 此時，參考文獻的寫法比較麻煩： Livernash, E. R. 1963. “The
Relation of Power to the Structure and Process of Collective Bargaining,” in
Bruce M. Russett, ed. Economic Theories of International Politics. Chicago: Markham (cited by
Kenneth N.Waltz, 1979. Theory of International Politics. New York: McGraw-Hill). （四）以下是錯誤的作法。如果沒有讀Livernash（1963）的原文，只是在Waltz（1979）的書上看到，卻讓讀者誤以為作者真正看到該文，這是藝高膽大，以為神不知鬼不覺： Livernash（1963: 430）就曾經指出，「罷工所導致的代價促使勞資雙方經常透過大範圍的談判來使爭端得以解決，從而使罷工很少真正發生。」 然後在參考文獻列上Waltz（1979）書上的來源： Livernash, E. R. 1963. “The
Relation of Power to the Structure and Process of Collective Bargaining,” in
Bruce M. Russett, ed. Economic Theories of International Politics. Chicago: Markham. 這樣的作法是有風險的，萬一Waltz（1979）漏了頁碼、或是年份寫錯、拿錯不同版本，怎麼辦？總不能怪Waltz（1979）吧？這時候，即使亡羊補牢，另外把Waltz（1979）加上參考文獻，依然掩飾不了偷吃步的事實： Waltz, Kenneth N.
